  • The Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education (TBoE) formally contracted a consortium of five private-sector entities to manage and operate a large-scale experience-oriented English-education facility aiming to nurture global citizens. The TBoE also decided to name the facility—“TOKYO GLOBAL GATEWAY,”dubbed “TGG,” while endorsing the outline of the project.

The main users of this facility will range in age from elementary school children to senior high school students. The facility expects to provide visiting students with various programs. These programs will include simulated experiences for students to practice speaking English in daily life overseas, such as at airport, restaurants, and so on. The facility will also offer programs dealing with science and technology, business, international contribution and international exchange, in which students discuss in English to work out solutions or create new ideas through group work. In those activities, many English instructors (“Specialists”) and teaching assistants (“Agents”) will help students to accomplish given tasks in each activity. Many public and private corporations--both Japanese and international--are expected to join this project as partners or supporters to give students practical and hands-on learning.
